WINTER 2023┃49 Are You Ready for 2023? Todd R. Ohlheiser is the Executive Director for Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association and the Colorado Stone, Sand & Gravel Association and can be reached at Hello Colorado construction industry. I hope everyone had a great holiday season with family and friends and came back recharged for the year ahead. We are now well into the new year and with it, the excitement and challenges of the year ahead. Here are a few updates regarding the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association, both a reflection of 2022, and for the year ahead. Regarding 2022, we have put together a brief video recapping the accomplishments we have made together, thorough the year. It can be viewed by going to the CRMCA website under 2022 recap video. Thanks for everyone who helped us improve the industry over the year. Recent Events: • Annual Conference – I need to thank all our sponsors and attendees that participated in the CRMCA/CSSGA Annual Conference in Dec. Participation was strong as our overlying theme was Workforce Development. Many national and local speakers participated in educational breakout sessions and shared their knowledge with membership. Additionally, awards were presented to recognize excellence wihin our industry. It is always great to see members engage in learning and networking opportunities. Thanks again to all, and especially Emma Dolan, who was in charge of the overall event. Her attention to detail showed as the entire event went extremely well. • CRMCA Night at the Rodeo – Once again, a very successful networking opportunity occurred with the Denver Stock Show. The CRMCA Night at the Rodeo occurred January 12, beginning with a dinner and tour of the Forney Museum, which is a must see right across the street from the Denver Coliseum. Then, of course, the rodeo which never disappoints as a live sporting event. Governmental Affairs • Legislative Committee. I know almost all of you can hardly wait for the 2023 Colorado Legislative Session to begin. To see the political machine in action is a thing of beauty!! (just seeing if you are paying attention!!!!) OK, there are issues, but that just means we need to stay engaged and participate. Remember, when it comes to legislature, you are either at the table, or on the menu. So we intentionally choose to be at the table. Members meet weekly (via conf calls to encourage statewide participation) with out lobbyist, Totsy Rees to go through bills and take action where necessary. Additionally, we will hold monthly Legislative Breakfast meetings downtown by the capital before board meetings. Contact Emma Dolan for more info if you are interested in what bills we are addressing. Technical Advancements: • CRMCA has taking a North American leadership role in improving the quality of fresh concrete field testing. The Concrete Testing Adherence Collaboration (CTAC) began in Colorado several years ago and has since been expanded to many areas across North America. It is offered through concrete associations and those currently utilizing the program include the following. If you are a contractor and interested in helping to eliminate improper field testing, contact our office regarding CTAC. This will not only help the industry, it can have a positive impact on your bottom line financials. • CalCIMA (California) • Concrete Ontario, Canada • CPG in Kansas City • Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association • Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association (currently onboarding) • Maryland Ready Mixed Concrete Association (currently onboarding) Buy Clean Colorado bill. CRMCA is currently working with our concrete producer members regarding the development of EPD’s. As everyone who designs or constructs with concrete knows, EPD’s are a crucial aspect of the future of concrete. Engagement with CDOT and the changes coming from the Buy Clean Colorado bill from 2021 are being addressed for upcoming implementation. Upcoming Events: • Legislative Breakfasts. As we look ahead, our first Legislative Breakfasts of 2023 rotate between the 3rd and 4th Wednesday each month of the session. • Networking Event. Understanding the importance of Networking, we will host a joint Networking Event in the Northern part of the State. This will occur on Feb 2 in Fort Collins. Prospective members are welcome. Make plans to attend with producers, vendors, suppliers of the concrete industry. These interactive sessions are always a great way to engage with industry associates. • Ski Day & Networking Event. Lastly, another networking event will take place on February 27-28 with the upcoming CRMCA/CSSGA Ski Day. CRMCA UPDATE Todd R. Ohlheiser
