60| ColoradoPublic Works Journal Trench Safety Stand Downs, Training & Scholarships NATIONAL UTILITY CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION Christine Barnes June was Trench Safety Stand Down month and NUCA (National Utility Contractors Association) of Colorado put on a great stand down open to all NUCA members and guests. Kris Graham, United Rentals Trench Safety instructor, taught a one-hour competent person training to over fifty fellow NUCAns and guests. The motto of the NUCA safety committee has always been that safety is for everyone. A proclamation from Governor Polis was issued for NUCA of Colorado declaring June 20-24, 2022 Trench Safety Stand Down Week. For additional resources www.nuca.com/tssd There have been over twenty trench related fatalities in the first half of 2022 and all of these deaths were preventable. There were fifteen trench related deaths in all of 2021. OSHA has issued a press release on enhanced enforcement initiatives it is launching in response to an alarming rise in trench-related fatalities. In keeping with its National Emphasis Program for excavations, OSHA compliance officers will perform more than 1,000 trench inspections nationwide where they may stop by, and inspect, any excavation site during their daily duties. NUCA of Colorado is dedicated to helping to provide safety, training and awareness to the members and industry. The association is hosting a crew leader training on November 34. NUCA’s Essential Skills for Crew Leaders Training is a two-day, intensive course that trains workers to be effective leaders and communicators so they can provide clear direction to your crew, and plan and schedule the crew’s work to maximize safety, production, and profit. The association is also a partner in planning a NAXSA/OSHA Safety Summit on October 5th with other industry leaders at the Adams County Fairgrounds. This will be a one-day safety event that includes speakers, live outdoor demonstrations and roundtable discussions. The event is free and includes breakfast and lunch. Registration Link NUCA of Colorado is holding a Pickleball Tournament to benefit the NUCA Colorado Scholarship fund on July 20th. This tournament will be the first of its kind for the association. Scholarships are awarded to member dependents through an application and review process by the committee. Last year the scholarship committee awarded ten scholarships to NUCA member dependents. The committee hopes to be able to award even more this year.
