Colorado Public Works Journal, Spring 2022

CSSGA UPDATE Safety is something we can focus on Hello Colorado Construction Industry. The following is an update of items underway at the Colorado Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (CSSGA). I hope everyone is doing well as we get thru another winter season. Here is what’s going on. • Governmental Affairs. In February, we restarted our in-person Legislative Breakfast sessions at the Tetra Tech downtown facility. This occurred February 23 with guest speakers Max Hynes and Andres Carrera from Sen. Hickenlooper’s office. Totsy Rees with Rees Consulting presented the most recent update of the bills we are debating during the session. The Legislative Subcommittee continues to meet on Monday mornings to discuss topics pertinent to the mining industry. • Mine Safety Institute (MSI). Many of you are aware of the award winning MSHA training videos and online learning made available from CSSGA. With the help of our business partner at the Department of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS), we are in the process of reshooting the safety training videos for a modern and updated look. As DRMS has secured the grant for funding, we are putting it to good use. The videos will soon be available on thru the DRMS website, and hopefully we can implement into our current training in the future. Thank you to Bill York-Feirn with the department for his leadership with the grant and helping us maneuver thru the grant application and video process. • American Concrete Institute (ACI). While ACI primarily involves concrete, it also includes the aggregate and base material testing and certifications for the mining world. So while the certification sessions were an extreme challenge during COVID, we are currently up and running at full speed, in order to meet demands. CRMCA recently released the registrations for courses occurring through June of 2022. Contact us at for registration information. • Events. ◊ Ski Retreat. The Ski Retreat was a huge success and very well attended (see right) in Breckenridge on Jan 31 & Feb 1. Thanks to our event sponsors including BURNCO Colorado, CHRYSO, Martin Marietta, and Monarch Mountain Minerals and Aggregates. Todd R. Ohlheiser ◊ Virtual Safety Awards Ceremony. CRMCA and CSSGA will recognize the 2021 Team Safety Awards winners during this virtual event on March 3 from 9:30 - 10:15 am Zoom. ◊ March 23rd Legislative Breakfast. The next Legislative Breakfast is scheduled for March 23rd at 7:30 am at Civic Center Plaza (1560 Broadway, 19th Floor Conference Room, Denver, CO 80202). Email to learn more or attend as a guest. ◊ Concrete day at the Capital. While primarily a CRMCA event, we are planning to re-start the popular Concrete day at the Capital on April 29 at the Colorado Capital grounds. CSSGA will participate. This is a great opportunity to say thanks to the hard working elected officials and staff at the Capital. ◊ Summer Conference. The 2022 Summer Conference will be held in Steamboat Springs. This event will take place on July 21-22. There you have it. I encourage you to reach out to with any questions. Thank you. Todd R.
