Colorado Public Works Journal, Spring 2019

2 THE ROAD AHEAD Tom Peterson Introduction 2019 RMAEC Webinar Schedule This year marks the Silver Anniversary of the CAPA “Best in Colorado” Asphalt Awards Program and it is the primary focus of this news- magazine. Started in 1993, the awards program has been recognizing quality achievement in asphalt pavement construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance for 25 years. The program started with awards in six initial categories. Over the years, additional categories have been added, competition has increased from the across the state and as a result, the overall quality continues to excel. Over 950 projects have been nominated for consideration and we have recognized 285 as “Best in Colorado.” The 25th annual was a special year as we saw a near record number of nominations and great competition for each of our award categories. The award recipients were recognized at our annual Awards Dinner and Program on February 27, 2019 at the Crowne Plaza DIA. In addition, the Colorado DOT recognized the smoothest asphalt paving projects on state highways in 2018 and the producers who most consistently produced the highest quality asphalt materials. The award winning projects are featured on pages 12 to 29 we have included a brief project description and we identify the key individuals from both the contractor and the owner/agency that made it happen. It is very clear that quality achievement requires a partnership between the contractor and the owner/agency/consultants. A key focus of the 46th Annual Rocky Mountain Asphalt Conference & Equipment Show held on February 27 – March 1 was to strengthen those partnerships and include sessions that provided insight on new technology, innovation, best practices, and leadership, see pages 10 and 11. Two highlights of the 2019 conference were a breakout session on Women of Asphalt (see page 24) and our ever growing Bring Your Kid to Work Day (see page 29). Much has changed over the past 25 years, but our commitment to advancing the use and quality of asphalt pavements in Colorado is as strong as ever. Here’s wishing you much success on your 2019 projects. We look forward to a great year and hopefully a record number of nominations for our 26th Annual “Best in Colorado” Asphalt Pavement Awards Program. Welcome to THE Road Ahead! — Spring 2019!
