Colorado Public Works Journal, Fall-Winter 2018

Fall/Winter 2018 • 3 s we prepare to go to press with this issue we are in the midst of election fever, so we are not in a position to either celebrate, or commiserate the results with you. We do however, have a lot of great reads to get your mind on track for what is going on in and around Colorado. We all know how few women there are working in this industry. Todays statistics show that women make up just 8% of the workforce in this sector. Transportation and Construction Girl this year held their second event and as their media sponsor CPWJ were personally able to meet and chat with many of the girls attending. Tamara Moon gives us her view on working in our industry, and an overview of the event on page 52. We were also fortunate to be able to interview one particular young lady (who also happened to be a guest speaker at the T&C event) for our 30 minutes with…. you can meet this inspiring girl yourself on page 10. We have barely had one snowfall so far this year, but following the impressive APWA Snow & Ice Conference that was held in Loveland in September, our public works crews are ready and able for action. Attendees of the show were able to improve their skills onthe winter maintenance equipment on display. See highlights from the event on page 65. CDOT held their TRANSPORTATION MATTERS SUMMIT 2018 (PS. page 66) which this year focussed on The Power of Partnerships. Guest speakers from DEN, RTD, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, and Mobility Choice all shared their vision on how we can, and should work with each other, to maximise our full potential. CPWJ will be reaching out to each of these companies as we prepare topics for our editorial calendar for 2019. And of course, this issue includes CAPA’s ‘The Road Ahead’ FALL insert, covering everything asphalt. As always, we like to hear from you, our readers, so do let us know how we are doing and how we can make this a better publication for you!
