Colorado Public Works Journal, Spring-Summer 2018

6 Colorado Public Works Journal Shouldering in Commerce City Colorado Public Works Journal were invited to view Commerce City’s recent purchase in action on 96th Ave/Highway 2. A money saving tactic for Commerce City was to make a purchase from Bobcat of the Rockies of the Roadwidener over renting the machine, which they had done for 2 years previously. Lucas Bustos, Pavement Operations Foreman for Commerce City explained “We have a lot of shouldering work here in Commerce City and using the Roadwidener allows us to get a lot more done. It saves us both time and manpower. We previously used the Motor Grader machine which meant you would have to have about 6-7 staff mem- bers versus we need just 4 when using the Roadwidener.” The new machine has already proved to be more efficient allowing Lucas and his team to complete around 2 miles of shouldering a day, as opposed to just 1 mile a day. “We carry out about a month or two of shouldering work a year. The amount of time that we use the Roadwidener it could pay for itself within a month. It can also be used with hot mix as well as recycled asphalt.” EQUIPMENT Works News Power Motive Corporation (PMC), leading construction equip- ment dealer based in Denver with branches across Colorado and SE Wyoming, has been recognized as a Top Performing Dealer by Komatsu America for calendar year 2017.
